Oman Mountain Hike Tour
5 days and 4 nights
Day 1: Start your hiking tour from Muscat by driving along the magnificent Batinah coastline and heading south at Barka to the Oasis of Nakhl. Next, travel across the mountains to the mouth of Snake Canyon, to begin our first hike through this canyon. “Snake Canyon hike” is by far the most diverse and challenging wadis hike. Every bend is a photo opportunity. It is an awesome hike although definitely not considered easy but, having completed it you will feel inspired. The name "Snake Canyon" refers to the serpentine effect created by the water cutting through the mountains and the wadi snaking through. Our hike of approximately 4 hours will have you jumping into pools of water and swimming in caves under the mountains. At places, it is so narrow that you can barely swim between the sides of the mountain. After completing the hike, we will stay at Bed & Breakfast house at Bima little village.
Day 2: After breakfast, we will visit the fascinating and hidden mountain village of Balad Sayt. This is an amazing village of winding pathways. We will walk through the village, there are great photo opportunities. From here, we will travel into a narrow winding road through the Western Hajar Mountains to the top of Sharaf Al Alamayn Mountain 2000m. Here we will commence a few hours of easy and interesting mountains hike “Al Al Alamayn Balcony Walk” where you will enjoy a unique panoramic view of over 1000 square kilometers of surrounding area. Next, we will travel to Jebel Shams, "Sun Mountain" which is the highest peak of the Al Hajar Mountains Chain, soaring more than 3,000 meters above sea level. Spectacular scenery and remote villages, this is Oman's Grand Canyon. We will spend the night in a comfortable resort at the top of the mountain.
Day 3: Next morning after an enjoyable breakfast, we will start The Jebel Shams walk. It is one of the most popular treks in Oman and known as the "Jabal Shams Rim Walk". The views from the trail are spectacular and offer unparalleled vistas of Wadi Nakhr. The hike will take you through more than half a billion years of geological time. Commencing from the village of Al Khateem, situated on the edge of the mountain at a height of 2,000 meters, you will hike approximately 4 hours passing an abandoned village of al Saab and terraces perched on the mountain side. After this we will head off with the 4-WD down the mountain to Wadi Ghul and to the beautiful old village of Misfah. The village of Misfah is perched on the side of a mountain where narrow ancient stone pathways lead you into the valley below. From here, we will head off again to the township of Nizwa, the ancient capital of Oman. Spend the night at a hotel in Nizwa.
Day 4: After breakfast, we visit the old part of the city and walk around the traditional Souq where there will be an opportunity to purchase and see many traditional Omani things including Omani Silver. Also you can see the huge Round Fort standing in the central of the city. After lunch, we will commence our trip to the town of Birkat Al Mawz situated at the base of Al Jebel Al Akhdar - The Green Mountain. It has this name because of the abundance of green terraced gardens surrounding the villages. The winding drive up the mountains is spectacular and the views breath-taking. You will have a tour to see around this mountain before checking in at the hotel.
Day 5: In the morning we start the lovely “terraces walk” and pass through the villages. Al Jebel Al Akhdar is shows another side of Oman, and is renowned for its high quality miniature pink roses which, for hundreds of years, have been distilled traditionally to produce its famous rose water and oil. During harvest in April, the wonderful fragrance can be smelt all over the plateau. We will walk through villages perched precariously on the sides of mountains and these offer fantastic opportunities to explore winding ancient pathways and view incredible terraced cultivation, around the villages of Al Aqor, Al Ain and Shereja.
